As teachers we learn throughout the years that our students coming in come with a lot of cultural knowledge wealth into the classroom. This is why encouraging students to share information about their ethnic background creates not just friendships but also respect for each other. Creating joy in diversity and learning from our cultures in the class makes the class welcoming. I am Puerto Rican and I speak to my students in Spanish and they are all repeating. Basic things like come here (ven aqui), look (mira), don't touch (no toque), here (toma), please be silent (por favor silencio), Bye ( adios), Hello (hola), and the new one is erase and start over (boron y cuenta nueva).

As teachers we understand that most our ELL learners may feel a sense of pressure for not knowing the language, the culture is often different then what they are accustom to and some times feel lost. Through this teacher can entrust respect to each individual student by learning their unique traditions, beliefs which in turn will help with student behaviors and lesson planning in the classroom.

Education and being educated as a teacher on culture will make you a very diverse teacher. This will also help tailor lesson and activities accordingly, and have not just a good relationship with the student, a welcoming classroom,  but also educate students on culture.
