With the upcoming school year on the horizon, I’m thinking a lot about the need to teach students how to effectively work in groups. The first video explains that group work and discussion must be learned and practiced. I noticed in the second video that the teacher activated her students’ thinking about Esperanza Rising by asking them to name the previous chapter’s title and summarize it. She was strategic with each step and it was clear that her students had already learned how to do this type of lesson. Again, I saw that this teacher was linking literature to other learning, which deepened student understanding. I appreciated how each student could be the “expert” so that they each had something important to contribute to class conversation.
