I think science fair projects (experiments) are good examples of criterion-based assessments that I use to reinforce concepts of the scientific method taught throughout the year. At about the midway point in the school year, students choose a testable question and must create a hypothesis, identify independent and dependent variables, create a materials list, step -by-step procedures, graph, table, and analyze results, cite sources, and share findings with their peers. Students are provided with a detailed rubric that lays out all expectations that they must self-grade first. Each component is turned in to be checked by me independently before the final product is presented, which gives the students more feedback and a chance to make corrections. The final product paints a clear picture of what the student has mastered and highlights areas of weakness for me to continue teaching.
