I would use a modeling approach in my instruction trying to incorporate not only modeling of my instruction but break into smaller groups where I combine ELL students with non-ELL students in order to create modeling scenarios amongst group activities in smaller settings.  Additionally, I would try to find topics or genres that the student is interested in and incorporate these into homework and lesson plans in order to engage the student in the learning process.
