School Guidelines for Textbook Selection
Criteria Selection: The following should be take into consideration when selecting textbooks
- Cultural Relevance -
- Multiple levels of text (social, moral, trade, cultural)
- Multiple, well-developed universal themes
- Provides multiple opportunities to practice with real world issues
Cultural Relevance: Textbooks reflect the cultural experiences and histories of all students in the classroom.
- Text Complexity
- Multiple layers of complex meaning
- Complex, implicit, and unconventional narrative structure
- Complex narration
- Frequent manipulations of time and sequence in structure
- Frequent use of abstract, figurative, and/or connotative language or irony
Accessibility: Ensure that the textbooks are accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities. Consider formats such as audio books, large print, or digital versions to accommodate different learning needs.
- Elements
- No signs of racism, sexism, ageism, antisemitism, anti-LGBTQ+, xenophobia
- No use of racial, religious, gendered, or any type of slurs.
Diversity and Representation: Textbook features diverse characters and perspectives, including those from different races, cultures, abilities, and backgrounds.

- Graphics are included
- Pictures are provided
Differentiated Instruction: Choose textbooks that allow for differentiated instruction, so that each student can access the content in a way that meets their individual learning needs.
