Mod 19 Discussion: Taking the Lead on Literacy

The content area approach that I would recommend for all content areas is Literacy In All Content Areas.

One aspect of this approach that I find particularly effective and would feel confident teaching about is the integration of vocabulary instruction. Basically making sure students not only know the words but understand how they fit into different subjects. For example, my international student from Germany, Angie, would be a good subject to talk about when it comes to vocabulary. I start by teaching her key terms like "headline," "byline," and "lead." Then, I would use examples and activities to show how these terms are used in journalism. This way, Angie can understand and use them effectively when writing her own articles.  Furthermore, I might utilize graphic organizers to visually represent the structure of a news article, helping Angie see how each component, including the headline, byline, lead, and quote, contributes to the overall piece.
