Module 16 Discussion: Modifications for the Second Language Learner
Modifications to curriculum for Second Language Learners are sometimes necessary when trying to assist an ELL students who is having difficulty with comprehension or even when taking a test. A teacher will sometimes have to modify tests to accommodate the ELL student, add time to accommodate the ELL student, text replacement and scaffolding is extremely important for ELL students.
(1) Introducing vocabulary at the beginning of each lesson, then referring back to that terminology as each progression of the story or article, re-emphasizing the meaning of those terms throughout the lesson helps to build comprehension and helps the student remember the words and definitions when being referred to in other subject matters.
(2) Modifying a text by allowing the student to read it in their language and then revisiting the text while applying the English language is advantageous to struggling ELL students. It might require more time for them but I think it is advantageous in the long-run. It helps them with comprehension.
