One strategy that I would use would be to teach metacognition to the student. I would do this by reading the text and sharing my thoughts out loud so that the student can understand the thinking process while reading while stopping frequently to ask if it makes sense. Additionally, I would have the student partner read with a mentor to gain confidence his or her metacognition skills.
