One simple intervention that could be used to help the student’s metacognitive abilities is modeling. The teacher would conduct reads aloud in whole group or small group. As the teacher is reading aloud, they could also think aloud on how they would react when they come to an unfamiliar word. When doing a one-to-one reading with the struggling student, the teacher listens closely as the student reads. Ask question about unfamiliar words instead of allowing the student to continue to read. Teaching metacognition skills when the reading struggle occurs helps student increase self-regulation skills.
